Hi Everyone,
As most of you are now aware, the association was approached last year by Mr. Alan George (Group Captain Ret. and ex 35 Sqn. Rad. Tech.) to design, manufacture and install a 35 Sqn. Plaque at the RAAF Memorial Grove, Canberra. For those who do not know it, the grove is on the left-hand side of the highway when driving from Goulburn and about a mile before coming to the residential outskirts of Canberra. Check Google for grove details and map if unsure of location. Click here for Location on Google Maps
Obviously when trying to write eighty years of squadron history to fit on a plaque 520mm x 380mm a lot of detail has to be omitted. We received various correspondence from numerous sources suggesting what should and should not be included. All worthy information which was appreciated by Sambo and myself but we were limited as to what we could use. I also employed the service of a graphic artist to do some art work on the plaque as my, and Sambo's, computer skills are limited.
For those who have seen a copy of the draft design I think it is a good effort for a couple of oldies who have never done this before.
We have placed an order with the manufacturer to cast the plaque and make the plinth and install same at the Memorial Grove. Hopefully this should be done by the 1st June for the planned unveiling. Sambo is working on a programme and details for the event which will be sent out in due course.
Thanks to all those who contributed towards the cost of the manufacture of the plaque - very much appreciated.
As a photo of a bronze plaque is a bit plain and uninteresting, I had a draft copy of my preferred design coloured - please see
attached (see image below). The final design of the plaque is slightly different to this coloured version, as again we had to rearrange the
content due to a lack of room and defence requirements.

Trust you all approve of our efforts and hope to see as many of you as possible in Canberra.
Cheers,
John McDougall.
P.S. If anyone is interested in a copy of the A3 coloured version of the plaque I can have them printed at a cost of $10 each.
Delivery may be a problem as they cannot be rolled or folded to post but we can hand deliver in Brisbane or take them to Canberra for those attending. However, if people want them I will work out some way to get them to you. It may be difficult but not impossible. Let Sambo know so we can get numbers. Or send us an email below.
Regards J. McD.
